Recorded assignment / 2023 field interactions · final report 19 March 2024

CocoaSoils process evaluation

Assess how the CocoaSoils programme was implemented and identify lessons for sustainable cocoa-production research and delivery.

Sector

Agribusiness & food manufacturing

Geography

Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Cameroon

Client type

International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)

Assignment objective

Evaluate implementation processes, relevance, efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability, and identify practical lessons for programme delivery.

Research approach

IDER combined document review, stakeholder interviews, online consultations and selected site visits with analysis of existing farmer-survey data. The final process-evaluation report was submitted to IITA on 19 March 2024.

Coverage

The evaluation covered Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria and Cameroon through a mix of remote and in-person interactions. Recorded visits included two core trial sites in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire and three satellite farms in Ghana; physical fieldwork in all four countries is not claimed.

Analysis

The evaluation analysed follow-up survey data collected by IITA and partners in May 2022 for 2,501 cocoa farmers, alongside qualitative implementation evidence. These were existing data analysed by IDER, not 2,501 new interviews conducted by IDER.

Deliverables

A final process-evaluation report presenting implementation findings, analytical evidence, lessons and recommendations for programme management and future delivery.

Client value and evidence limits

The assignment provided an evidence base for programme learning and delivery decisions. Observational comparisons and preliminary findings are not represented as definitive causal impact estimates.

Confidentiality

Only a bounded assignment summary is presented. Private stakeholder material, respondent records and the full client report are not published here.
